Weaving on ARTE Concert
Project Nouveaux Horizons was initiated by the violinist Renaud Capuçon and violist Gérard Caussé. On the 18th of October Justina’s composition Weaving for ensemble was performed at the Grand Theatre of Provence. Watch it on Arte Concert or on Radio France presented by Arnaud Merlin.
Performers: Raphaëlle Moreau (violin), Vladimir Percevic (viola), Caroline Sypniewski (cello), Aliya Vodovozova(flute), Raphaël Sévère (clarinet), Vassilena Serafimova (percussion), Guillaume Bellom (piano). In the same concert Le Carnaval des animaux (recited by Renaud Capuçon & Gérard Caussé!) by Camille Saint Saëns (1835 -1921) and a new piece of Vito Žuraj.
Weaving was selected among the 15 best Lithuanian compositions of the year 2020, competition organised by Lithuanian Composer’s Union.
Weaving will soon appear in an album Nouveaux Horizons.

Weaving (2020) for ensemble:
flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, viola, violoncello.
Composition Weaving is an imagined process of turning the weaving materials into three dimensional artefacts through musical expression. The composition has emerging repetitive patterns weaving it’s texture with ‘melodic’ instruments while piano and percussion are responsible for the attacks and resonances. The piano is prepared with metal wires and also played with a superball in order to create a continuous sound on the low strings. In the percussion section metal instruments like crotales and a singing bowl are prepared by coupling them with drums altering both their attack and sustain. The rhythm consists of superposed pulses while the harmonic material is minimal, but enriched with the fluctuating orchestration of hybrid timbres as if observing the same artefact from a different angle. The third dimension is expressed in the contrast of the blasting tutti attacks followed by the distant resonances before becoming a contemplation of continuous spinning of the suspended harmony.
