Chœur & Orchestre Sorbonne Université

Paris - Vilnius

The COSU and Vilnius University's ensembles celebrate Čiurlionis, Poulenc, and contemporary Lithuanian music in a dialogue between tradition and modernity.

  • Le 08 Dec. 2025

  • 20:00 - 21:30

  • Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne

This exceptional concert brings together the Sorbonne University Choir & Orchestra with the Vilnius University Chamber Orchestra and Academic Mixed Choir «Gaudeamus». Conceived as a bridge between the two capitals, Paris and Vilnius, the program pays tribute to two major figures.
First, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis – composer, painter, and pioneer of Lithuanian modernism – whose post-Romantic repertoire remained unjustly unknown in Western Europe until the 1990s. Then Francis Poulenc, who, with his radiant and irreverent Gloria, created one of the great spiritual frescoes of the 20th century, composed at a time when he had returned to faith.
In counterpoint, the evening also features contemporary works by Donatas Zakaras and Justina Repečkaitė – a Lithuanian composer based in Paris – highlighting the vitality of today’s Lithuanian music and the dialogue it establishes between tradition and modernity.
